A Haven of Rest

The Space

An enchanting historic church nestled in the heart of Tasmania…

The former Brickhill Memorial Church was built in 1879 using the generous posthumous donation of its namesake, the convict-turned-businessman Joseph Brickhill. It has lived many lives since that time, including stints as a wool museum, cafe, art gallery, residence, and now operating as a unique short stay accommodation for weary travelers.

The building is constructed of bluestone with a slate roof and a multitude of stained glass windows. Within, ornate timber beams and a polished hardwood floor continue the demonstration of exemplary craftsmanship seen throughout the church. All of these features are original. Due to the cultural and architectural significance of the property, Haven on High is on Tasmania’s heritage registry.

The Hosts

After years working in Melbourne as consultants, lecturers, and game designers, we felt the call of Tasmania’s calm and gentle nature to help us slow down and, in this case, literally smell the roses that line the driveway. Lured by the clean air, appealing natural environment, friendly residents and towns that feel like time capsules, we quickly found that Tasmania (and Haven on High in particular) help us relax and recover from our exhausting big-city lives.

We are sharers, so it didn’t take us long to formulate an idea: creating a space that welcomes us home when we need an escape, but making it equally welcoming to others who can enjoy the same feeling of rejuvenation when we’re not here. You may find evidence of our interests and hobbies sprinkled around: vinyl records, books about Tasmania, a guitar, and lots and lots of board games (our favourite way to spend time with friends). Please use these items with enjoyment and care.
